DOES EDO STATE HAVE A SEAPORT?

If you can recall, there was a proposed plan for the construction of a seaport in Edo state, in 2013, President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan’s administration approved the construction of Gelegele sea Port in Ovia North Local Government Area of Edo State.

The community Gelegele which is known for trades since time in memorial, also holds a lot of sentimental and Historical grounds, in the sense that, the times the Portuguese and Europeans came to the ancient Bini Kingdom for slaves and pity trades, Gelegele was the route used for passage. Captain Philip and some British soldiers enrouted to Benin through Oputorukubu waterside of Gelegele community during the Benin massacre in 1896, so it holds sentimental ground.

Sentiments aside, don’t you think the construction of a seaport in Edo state will boost revenue and can also serve as a source to generate more opportunities for the state ?

2. More jobs will calm the the alarming rate of poverty in the country and encourage more ventures and professions within the locality to be birthed.

3. The state would become an Industrial state like Lagos, Rivers e.t.c, for foreign economies to venture into exportation and importation endeavors and also, encourage the Maritime Industry infrastructure within the governmental jurisdiction.

Gelegele Community is among one of the ijew speaking communities in Edo State and ruled by a mornach, Pere of Olodiama Kingdom.
